Preparation for the Greek Language Certification:
The Ellinomatheia Exam (Certificate of Attainment in Greek) is the official Greek language certification for nonnative speakers. It is a recognized international certification of proficiency in the Greek language, and is awarded by the Centre for the Greek Language under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Education.
It assesses non-native speakers’ reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills across six CEFR levels (A1 to C2) and is designed for children, teenagers, and adults who wish to:
- Study at Greek Universities
- Prove Greek language competence for professional or personal reasons
- Satisfy requirements for Greek citizenship or residency
- Gain an official credential in Modern Greek
The Elinomatheia exam is aligned with the CEFR system, meaning the exam levels correspond directly to the CEFR proficiency levels.
The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is an internationally recognized standardized system measuring and describing a person’s proficiency in a foreign language.
It classifies a candidate’s proficiency skills in Greek across six levels, from beginner to advanced, that reflect the candidate’s ability to use Greek in real-life contexts, from basic communication to advanced fluency.
CEFR Levels for Ellinomatheia Exam:
A1 (Beginner)
You can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and basic phrases. Example: Introduce yourself, ask for directions, or order food.
A2 (Elementary)
You can communicate in simple tasks that require a simple exchange of information on familiar topics.
Example: Describe your background, explain routines, or talk about your family.
B1 (Intermediate)
You can handle most situations while traveling in a Greek-speaking area. You can also produce simple connected text on familiar topics.
Example: Write emails, five descriptions, express opinions, and narrate events.
B2 (Upper Intermediate)
You can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity, making regular interaction with native speakers possible without strain.
Example: Explain your point of view on abstract topics and discuss issues related to work or education.
C1 (Advanced)
You can express yourself fluently and spontaneously, without searching for expressions. You can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects.
Example: Write essays, participate in discussions on specialized topics, and understand nuanced content.
C2 (Proficient)
You can express yourself spontaneously, quite fluently, and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning.
Example: Engage in complex conversations, understand almost everything you hear or read, and summarize information from different sources.
