Finding the Right Balance Between Books and Technology
Technology has transformed the way children learn. Digital books, educational apps, interactive games, and online resources have expanded access to information and created exciting new learning opportunities. While these tools offer many advantages, they have not replaced one of the most valuable educational practices: reading aloud.
Research has consistently shown that reading aloud supports language development, vocabulary growth, listening comprehension, and literacy skills. Educational researcher Jim Trelease, author of The Read-Aloud Handbook, has long emphasized that reading aloud helps children develop stronger readers by exposing them to richer language than they often encounter in everyday conversation.
At the same time, digital technology offers important benefits. Interactive learning platforms can increase engagement, provide immediate feedback, and allow students to explore topics through videos, simulations, and adaptive activities. Organizations such as the International Literacy Association (ILA) encourage educators and families to use digital tools thoughtfully as part of a balanced literacy experience rather than as a replacement for books and conversation.
The greatest challenge is not choosing between books and technology, but knowing how to use each effectively. When children spend excessive time passively consuming digital content, opportunities for conversation, imagination, and sustained attention may decrease. Reading aloud, on the other hand, encourages children to ask questions, make predictions, and think critically about ideas while strengthening the bond between adult and child.
Reading aloud also benefits older children. Listening to stories and informational texts exposes them to sophisticated vocabulary, complex ideas, and meaningful discussions that continue to support reading comprehension and critical thinking throughout the school years.
Technology is an important part of modern education, and it offers many valuable learning opportunities. However, it is most effective when combined with practices that encourage communication, reflection, and human connection. Reading aloud remains one of the simplest and most powerful ways families can support learning in today’s digital world.
As technology continues to evolve, the ways children learn will continue to change. Yet some of the most meaningful learning experiences remain timeless. Reading aloud is more than simply sharing a book—it is an opportunity to build language, curiosity, critical thinking, and meaningful connections that support lifelong learning.
